Today we interview Carlo Della Cioppa, Head of Innovation & Digital Transformation of BTO S.p.A., a company that recently joined the Relatech Group.

The topic that we want to deepen with Carlo concerns the importance of cloud adoption and in particular of the theme of cloud mobility, in the digitalization strategy of a company.

" Let's talk about cloud adoption: why can't companies help but learn more about this issue in depth today? "
To answer this question, I will start with some data. A research by the Cloud Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano (Mercato Cloud Computing 2022 in crescita nonostante l'instabilità geopolitica ed economica (osservatori.net), one of the realities that I know and that I respect a lot because it is able to give a constantly updated perspective on the evolution of the cloud, shows very high growth numbers in the sector.

The market value of the Cloud has reached a turnover in Italy that is close to 5 billion euros. The cloud was adopted by 52% of Italian SMEs, an increase compared to the previous year. Market numbers have grown extremely significantly year-on-year on all fronts. If we look at the use of hybrid solutions has grown by 22% compared to 2021. IaaS services, therefore infrastructure, grew by 27%, PaaS services by 33% and finally the SaaS world grew by 14%. Percentages that translate into billions of euros more on the market.

So the numbers say this, all cloud-related segments are growing strongly, often in double digits.
Personally, I consider the decision to embark on a cloud journey irreversible. I am absolutely not saying that the cloud is a necessary choice, that is, a path that must be taken regardless. When I talk about irreversible Cloud, I mean that the cloud is constantly within the strategic choices with which a company must deal with respect to what is its path of transformation and efficiency, especially from a digital point of view. In particular, if you think of an ecosystem of digitization solutions that today more than ever is increasingly cloud native.

Taking this path, it should also be specified that the future will be multi-cloud, even this irreversibly.

We cannot think of unique solutions, whether public or private. So the cloud world will become increasingly complex, developed across multiple layers and cloud providers. The boundaries where I am going to place my resources (between public and private) will span multiple clouds of my choice, depending on the strategy, the necessary power and costs.
This situation consequently brings a problem of additional complexity, that of cloud mobility, one of the paradigms of this market that companies must necessarily face.

"Does the cloud have any advantages? If so, which ones?"
Absolutely yes. The cloud has the great advantage of moving very important elements of complexity elsewhere and taking them out of my horizon. Surely it also brings advantages from the point of view of cost efficiency because it allows me to shape my consumption in an almost sartorial way with respect to the development of my business.

By adopting these services, I am transferring all the burden of upgrade, development, maintenance, skilled labor and server security to the provider, while also adding important scalability possibilities.

It is a technological solution at any level that adapts to all sizes, so there is no company, just as there is no specific sector, where you can not use the cloud. There is no company size above or below which the cloud is impractical. However, it is important to highlight that you need a well-defined strategy according to your needs.

The cloud is a journey. Let's forget that it can be a short-term solution, indeed, we must have clear the destination and the objectives to be achieved.

"So, given the benefits, what advice do you have for those who want to start the journey considering the importance of cloud mobility?"
Cloud mobility is an extremely important element, starting from the first drafts of the strategy that we want to adopt to make this change.

We have said how the future of the market will consist mostly of efficient multi-cloud solutions. So you must first have clear the boundaries of the environments and then map the internal positioning of the various resources. It is essential to decide with extreme care the strategic position of the properties by building an ad-hoc roadmap, following your needs.

I can tell you that flexibility, security and ability to find tailor-made solutions for every request, are in fact the characteristics that more and more customers demand from cloud providers. Precisely for this reason, I repeat, the future will be increasingly oriented towards multi-cloud and hybrid cloud. The boundaries where to place resources will no longer be limited to a single provider but we must imagine a delimitation that spans multiple clouds, with data and workloads that move with a certain flexibility between these spaces.

For those who still do not know the problem, cloud lock-in occurs when a company is bound to a specific cloud provider for a number of reasons that are explained in detail here.

The countermeasure is always the same, adopt a correct cloud mobility strategy and the right tools to facilitate the movement of resources between different cloud services.

"Finally, how can BTO help companies looking to tackle the cloud adoption journey together with Relatech?"
BTO and Relatech aim to position the value of the range of their Cloud services exactly starting from the point where the Customer is in his path of verification, selection, evaluation and / or optimization of his transformation journey to the Cloud.

We intend to help customers define their cloud adoption strategy as well as set up and implement their implementation roadmap. We direct and support them in the choices of adoption, efficiency as well as revision of the map both architectural and application. Optimization of Cloud usage methods as well as Cloud development logics. Cost efficiency, process automation and review of operating methods with a view to DevOps.
